The 40th Tokai University Overseas Educational Cruise Departure Ceremony
On Sunday, February 15 the Tokai University Overseas Educational Cruise departure ceremony was held at Shimizu Harbour. This overseas educational cruise which began in 1968, celebrated its 40th departure this year. The leader of this training group is Professor Nobutaka Kutsuzawa and its student leader is Ms. Yoko Arai, a senior in the Department of Art. There are a total of 94 students including: fifty-three students from the Tokai University Shonan Campus, one each from Takanawa, Numazu, Asahikawa Campuses and Tokai University Fukuoka Junior College, nineteen from the Shimizu Campus, three from the Isehara and Sapporo Campuses, two from the Kumamoto Campus, ten from the Aso Campus. In addition there are also twelve staff members, Captain Takashi Kawauchi of the Tokai University Research and Training Vessel Bosei Maru and twenty-seven crew members, and twenty-seven cadets from the School of Marine Science and Technology, Department of Navigation for a total of 150 in the training group.

Tokai Alumni Dr. Marzan Appointed Chairman for the BPPT

Dr. Marzan Aziz Iskandaor, alumni of Tokai University Graduate School of Engineering Master’s and Doctorate Degree programs, was named Chairman of the Indonesian Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on January 1, 2009. The BPPT is a government system under direct supervision of the President in which its goal is to evaluate, select and apply the knowledge and technology needed for the national development of Indonesia. Dr. Marzan entered the Tokai University Graduate School of Engineering Master’s Program as an Indonesian government scholar in 1989 while he was researcher at BPPT. 

The under the guidance of Engineering Department Professor Yoshibumi Mizutani, he earned his Master’s degree in 1991 and Doctorate’s degree in 1994 in the field of Electrical Power Systems Engineering. After completing graduate school, Dr. Marzan returned to Indonesia and was appointed Deputy Chairman of BPPT in 2005. In recent years, Dr. Marzan has contributed to the foundation of collaborative international research and cooperation in the field of science and technology with Tokai University and has participated in academic conferences hosted by Tokai University as a speaker.  He has also been working towards establishing an Indonesian branch for the Tokai University Alumni Association as well as making efforts to sending international students to Tokai. 

Dr. Marzan is truly a great alumni member that represents Indonesia. Dr. Marzan shared his future goals, “It is almost nerve-wracking to suddenly find myself the head of 3,500 employees as the Chairman, but it is my sincere hope to continue in assisting the people of Indonesia.  I also hope to continue my small role in contributing to the development of my alma mater, Tokai University.” 

Tokai Univ Takanawa High School Band Achieves Excellence at European Tournament

The Tokai University Takanawadai High School Band received excellent results at the international competition held in Schladming, Austria. This band has consecutively placed first in the All Japan Band Competition from 2005 through 2007.   

Tokai University Takanawadai High School Band represented Japan in the 11th CISM and Mid Europe International Youth Orchestra Competition held in July 2008.  There they performed brilliantly and placed first in the top category A (13 groups participated) with the highest marks they ever received and in category B (14 groups participated) which is the general category for high school level bands.  In addition, the Band placed second overall in the Competition.   

In celebration of this brilliant achievement, the school received a special congratulatory address from the Japanese High School Band Association.

Tokai University International Fair held on November 20, 2008
On November 20, 2008, the Tokai University International Fair was held on the Shonan Campus.  This event began last year as an opportunity for exchange between Japanese and international students.  The “Speech Contest in Six Languages” with Japanese student participants and the “Japanese Speech Contest” with international student participants were held in the Matsumae Commemoration Hall.  The entire Shonan campus celebrated “International Day” with classrooms in Building 8 used for an exhibition to introduce the culture of the international students’ home countries as well as holding an explanation meeting for international students.

Tokai Univ Forms Agreements for Academic Exchange with Thailand's Thai-Nichi Institute of Technology

Tokai University Forms Agreements for Academic Exchange and Cooperation with Thailand's Thai-Nichi Institute of Technology and Thailand's Ministry of Education, Committee for Higher Education.

On October 24, Tokai University exchanged the written contracts of the Agreement for Academic Exchanges and Cooperation with the Thai-Nichi Institute of Technology (TNI) in Thailand.  This Agreement was formed to promote academic exchanges between the two institutions.  Mutual exchanges of students and faculty are to take place after discussion between Tokai University and TNI.
